Creating pastel paintings of late has taken a new turn.......a turn towards a looser, less detailed painting style. Dappled Creek was the beginning of this new era. No clue why, but I am embracing this new style and excited to see where it leads.

This painting has a new home and I am always humbled when that happens.

As stated in the previous post, I have been involved with a commission for awhile. But prior to beginning it, I decided that I might better bone up on painting a landscape. This painting gave me the opportunity to paint a landscape but to also, improvise and create what is not actually included in the photo.

I have a bad habit of being tied to the photo in my paintings. Trying to expand and add what the painting might need to be more interesting is a goal of mine. The actual photo was of a creek with maybe a foot wide trickle of water in it at any one point. This was fun!

This painting is the third version of this scene. One of the first two versions will be entered in the Austin Pastel Society Juried Member Show--still deciding which one. I began this with an underpainting as Barbara Jaenicke instructs. My next struggle was to keep it loose and depict the light and shadows.

At the Creek

The subject of this painting is on private property in Comal County. We were allowed to paint there while taking part in a Clive Tyler workshop a couple of years ago. It was a really lovely area, but the day was gray and drizzling. Clive saw a painting everywhere, but I didn't share his enthusiasm. I mainly saw gray and dreary.
